After School Life

It will be clear that much effort is put into academic areas of the curriculum, but this is not at the expense of social, physical and recreational activities.

Games, Clubs & Societies

A full after school activities programme is organised by a member of the care team who, in addition to her normal duties, has been appointed to the role of Project Specialist, Clubs and Activities, including fashion shows, School Prom, quizzes, discos. Many sports are undertaken very successfully as well as the more unusual activities, such as windsurfing, snorkelling, canoeing, judo and karate.

The number and description of the registered clubs and societies changes from time to time according to fashion or interest of the availability of members of staff but the following clubs flourish: Chess, Horse Riding, Trampolining, Canoeing, Snooker, Army Cadets, Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Every effort is made to ensure that children have the opportunity to undertake activities in Newbury with hearing youngsters and as well as young people from Newbury coming into School to join in activities on the campus

School games for younger pupils include football, cricket, athletics, tennis, hockey, netball, rounders and swimming. In all these sports school teams play matches against public schools and comprehensive schools in Berkshire and neighbouring counties. Pupils in the senior forms also have courses in squash rackets, golf, archery, badminton, table tennis and orienteering.

Pupils are allowed to bring bicycles to school but must pass the Road Safety Cycling Proficiency Test before being allowed to cycle. The most senior pupils may arrange driving lessons and take the driving test in Newbury.

Music

Pupils may learn to play musical instruments from a wide choice and many do so (currently over one third of our pupils). Concerts are arranged in school so that pupils have an opportunity to perform. A variety of music groups go to give recitals elsewhere and to take part in music events arranged for schools in Newbury and West Berkshire.

Youth Club

Cole’s Diner is the School Youth Club, funded by donations from Mary Hare Alumni and the PTA and named after an Alumni. Styled as an American Diner, it is a place where pupils can meet and have refreshments.
