Circle of Friends is an approach to enhancing the inclusion, in a mainstream setting, of any young person experiencing difficulties in school because of disability, personal crisis
or their challenging behaviour towards others. The ‘circle of friends’ approach works by mobilising the young person’s peers to provide support and engage in problem solving
with the person in difficulty.
This is an excellent opportunity to learn from the educational psychologists who brought this DfES endorsed approach to the UK. Their work will soon appear on a new Channel 4
documentary, so this is a great chance to see them live!

Teachers of the Deaf have regularly commented that criteria used to measure writing progress in hearing children are inadequate for deaf children, because they do not measure the level of skill at which many deaf children are working. The Analytical Writing Assessment is just what they have been waiting for.
The day includes background, research findings and “hands-on” use of assessment and programme materials.

This course is focused on strategies for promoting and monitoring the development of higher order and independent thinking and learning skills in deaf children at KS2, 3 and 4.
It uses recent research, but also the national strategies, to explore the ways in which those supporting deaf children can incorporate such strategies into their lessons and interactions
with the children to secure their learning optimally, including the encouragement of the voice of the child and of children taking responsibility for their own learning.

Early Years settings are increasingly caring for more deaf babies, children and their families, whose hearing impairment was diagnosed early, as part of the Newborn Hearing Screening process. This study day concentrates on the special needs of hearing-impaired 0-2 year olds and uses a combination of presentations, small group discussions and 'hands on' workshops to promote understanding and evelop skills related to the special needs of these babies and children. |
