Studying at Mary Hare Sixth Form
Opportunities
At Mary Hare we believe in helping Hearing-Impaired students to aim high and to achieve excellence. Nearly all of our Sixth Formers go on to university and take degrees. Others follow a more vocational route. Everything we do is based on our belief in what deaf people can achieve. We try to remove obstacles and our Specialist Teachers of the Deaf and excellent resources, combined with the hard work and determination of our students, lead to first class results. Class sizes are small – seldom larger than six or seven – and there is great scope for individual help and support.
Our experience has shown that students do best if they are taught through spoken language and for this reason sign language is not used. We pay great attention to your amplification needs and try to ensure that you are able to put whatever hearing you have to the best possible use. You will work not only with subject teachers but also with graduate Audiologists and, if appropriate, a Speech and Language Therapist.
Student Life
In the Sixth Form at Mary Hare you will be expected to work hard. Private study lessons are supervised by members of staff who can help you with your work and you are expected to study in your room at the end of the school day. In the evening you can go back into school if you wish when, again, you will find a teacher on duty to help you with your work. We try to develop study habits which will ensure that you are ready for the challenge of University when you leave us. Although there are younger pupils at Mary Hare, you will live on your own campus and, being among the oldest pupils, you have a number of privileges.
Of course you sometimes need to take a break from your studies. You will be encouraged to develop your hobbies and interests and to organise activities yourselves or with the support of the Care Staff, who live on the Sixth Form campus with you. So if you want to play football on the all-weather pitch, to book some driving lessons or to arrange a disco, you will be encouraged to go ahead.
