Wildlife and Sensory Garden Project

We would like to develop a wildlife and sensory garden at Mary Hare Primary School.
The garden will explore ways of introducing children to biodiversity, conservation and looking after plants, flowers and growing vegetables to eat. Ideas for planting and habitats could include bird boxes, bird tables, herbs, scented flowers and common vegetables in raised planters.
The pupils will be involved in the garden design and once it is established, they will help to look after a variety of plants throughout the year. The garden will take pupils on a sensory journey, of colour, texture, scent and the sound from both the visiting birds and the breeze rustling the plants.

Sensory areas

Each sensory area will have its own raised bed, allowing easy access. One or two benches will enable the pupils to sit and enjoy the plants.
The garden will help children learn by a hands-on approach exposing them to a multitude of colours, patterns, smells, sounds, and textures that will stimulate and hone their sensory skills.  It will keep them engaged and also allow the teacher to explore with them other important lessons about nature, changing weather conditions and seasons.
