Howard House

For most of the year 7 pupils, coming to Mary Hare is their first time away from home. We acknowledge that this process is not only a big step for the young person beginning their school career, but also a huge one for mum and dad as well.

Our aim is to support and guide you and your son or daughter through their first year. We have a team of experienced care professionals who specialise in encouraging, celebrating and praising positive and thoughtful behaviour. We respect the fact that every mum and dad has spent many years teaching, guiding and supporting his or her son or daughter up until this point. Our aim is to continue that care, with your important input.

Each year we welcome approximately 25-30 young people and their families, for whom Mary Hare becomes their second home. We pride ourselves on the homely environment of Howard House and believe it is another key element why our young people settle in so quickly. Every young person has access to a computer to receive and send e-mails from a personal account set up at school.

Older pupils are always keen to volunteer to be a ‘New Year 7 peer monitor’. This is someone who is age appropriate, who has been through the experience and is more than happy to look after and show a new person around the school. We also send out personalised ‘welcome letters’ during the summer months from that individual to new Year 7 pupils.
